# Magic Pen

The Magic Pen is how you write magic down. It draws glyphs when you study, and it puts circles and spells onto paper as [scrolls]($mechanics/scrolls).

## Ink

A pen's ink is its durability bar. A pen that is out of ink draws nothing, and it is never destroyed by running dry.

**Every glyph you draw costs 1 ink**, whether you are studying or writing. Wrong glyphs and dashes cost ink too. Glyphs you *type* once you have mastered them cost nothing. See [Workshop]($mechanics/workshop).

## Grades

Every pen has a grade, from **F** up to **S**. The grade caps the level of circle it can write.

| Grade | Highest level it can write | Ink it holds |
|---|---|---|
| F | 2 | 60 |
| D | 4 | 100 |
| C | 6 | 140 |
| B | 8 | 180 |
| A | 9 | 220 |
| S | 10 | 260 |

A new pen is grade F. Hover over a pen to see its grade and level. Better pens come from alchemy.

## Writing a scroll

Hold the pen in your **main hand** and keep paper in your pack or off hand. Right-click to open the writing surface. You can also put paper on a discovery pedestal in a [workshop]($mechanics/workshop) and right-click it with the pen. Draw the circle as you would to cast it.

When the circle is complete:

- The paper is used up and the scroll is written.
- You pay the **mana** and **soul** the circle would cost to cast, plus the ink for each glyph drawn.
- If the pen's grade is too low for the circle's level, you are refused and told which grade you need. The paper and the ink for the glyphs are spent. The mana and soul are not.

Scrolls can then be read once, by anyone. See [Scrolls]($mechanics/scrolls).

## Copying

**Shift-right-click** with the pen to copy the last scroll you wrote. It costs the same ink as the original, a sheet of paper, and the mana and soul of the circle. You must still know the words the scroll uses.

Copies fail **one time in ten**. A failed copy still spends the ink and the paper, but not the mana or the soul. Every other refusal (nothing written yet, pen too weak, not enough ink, no paper, not enough mana) happens before anything is spent. After a copy the pen has a one-second pause.

## Refilling

Put a damaged pen and **one ink sac** in a crafting grid. Nothing else goes in.

| Ink | Ink restored |
|---|---|
| Ink sac | 20 |
| Glow ink sac | 40 |
| Perfect (maximum-purity) ink sac | 40 |
| Perfect glow ink sac | 80 |

A grade F pen takes plain ink. Every other grade needs **purified** ink: a sac thrown onto a Transmute I circle with a strong or perfect purify potion takes on the potion's purity. Perfect ink is the top purity.
