# Magic Levels

Every circle ends in a number: its **level**. A higher level reaches further and does more, at a higher cost. Your
**magic level** is the highest level you can write, and it is set by the numerals you know.

## Climbing

You learn the first numeral along with DISCOVER. Every numeral after that is learned at a **[Level]($circles/level)
circle**, one rung at a time, in order. Rungs two to eight are named after the seven deadly sins.

Each rung asks for an offering, and learning a numeral costs a permanent share of your [soul]($mechanics/soul). An
offering you earned by the gentler route costs half. What each rung wants is part of the game, and this wiki leaves it
for you to find.

The tenth level is never sold at a Level circle. It comes much later.

## Finding the way

You are not on your own:

- **The Eye of Loot** has something to say about the creature each rung needs, when you look at it. See
  [Eye of Loot]($mechanics/eye_of_loot).
- **Daily quests** offered at your magic level hint at the next rung. Each one only appears to a mage at that level,
so a level 1 mage is pointed at the second numeral and nothing beyond. See [Daily Quests]($mechanics/daily_quests).

## Other limits on level

- **Your pen.** A Magic Pen can only write circles up to its grade. A new pen reaches level 2, and the best pens reach
  level 10. See [Magic Pen]($mechanics/magic_pen).
- **Spells** taught by teachers or scrolls are not levelled by this ladder.
