# Reagent Scrolls

Every torii gate has an offering barrel between its posts. Besides the specific offerings each gate answers (see
[Torii Gates]($mechanics/torii_gates) and [Torii Offerings]($mechanics/torii-offerings)), the barrel can do one more
thing: turn ordinary items into scrolls that teach words.

Specific offerings come first. If what is in the barrel matches one of them, that offering is answered and nothing
below happens. The reagent craft only runs when no specific offering matches.

## What you need

- A barrel at a torii gate.
- A **Magic Pen** lying in the barrel, with ink in it.
- Paper.
- You must know DISCOVER, because the craft is triggered by casting it on the barrel.

## Laying out the barrel

The barrel has 27 slots, which the craft reads as three rows of nine. Each row is one scroll.

1. Put **reagents** in the row from left to right. They spell a word, one letter per reagent.
2. Put **one paper** after the last reagent. Nothing may come after the paper.
3. Leave gaps if you like. Empty slots are ignored.

A stack counts as that many letters, so a stack of three of the same reagent is three letters in a row. A word can be
at most five letters long.

Cast DISCOVER on the barrel. Every row is judged first, and only if all of them pass is anything used up. A row that
does not work cancels the whole cast and tells you why, and nothing is spent.

What a row can make:

| The row holds | You get |
|---|---|
| Reagents that spell a word a scroll can teach, then paper | A scroll bound to that word |
| The **space** reagent alone, then paper | An unbound scroll |

A row of reagents that spells a word no scroll can teach is refused. So is an item that is no reagent at all, a space
mixed with letters, and a row with no paper.

You can make up to three scrolls in a single cast. Each uses one sheet of paper from its row, and the reagents in the
row are consumed. The ink used grows with the length of the word. An unbound scroll costs none.

## The reagents

There are 26 letters, one reagent for each, and a separate reagent for the space. They are ordinary items from the
base game.

**Which item stands for which letter is different in every world.** The wiki cannot tell you, because for your world it
would be wrong. You learn your own world's alphabet by playing.

Place a reagent on a pedestal that carries a DISCOVER circle, inside a workshop, and it shows you its letter. It also
teaches you that glyph.
