# Scrolls

Several different things are called scrolls. They are not interchangeable.

| Scroll | What it does |
|---|---|
| Spell scroll | Read with the [Eye of Loot]($mechanics/eye_of_loot) to learn a spell. |
| Word scroll | Teaches one word, at a discovery pedestal. |
| Magic scroll | A circle or spell you wrote on paper. Read once. |
| Crafting scroll | Stores a recipe. |
| Lost Knowledge | A blank scrap that grants a riddle when read. |

## Spell scrolls

Wear the Eye and right-click a spell scroll. You learn the spell, and it costs some soul. The scroll is **not used up**, so spare copies can be traded. Reading one you already know costs nothing. One item covers every spell, and the scroll is named for the spell it holds.

Spell scrolls turn up in **pillager outpost** and **woodland mansion** chests. A server sets the chance in its config, and a pack can replace it.

## Word scrolls

A word scroll carries one word. Put it on a discovery pedestal in a [workshop]($mechanics/workshop) and draw the word with your [pen]($mechanics/magic_pen) to learn it. The scroll is never used up, whether you succeed or fail. The Eye can't read a word scroll.

The tooltip names the word. It shows the letters in brackets only once you know it.

Word scrolls turn up in **shipwreck** chests, with the same server-set chance as spell scrolls.

## Magic scrolls

Write these yourself with a [Magic Pen]($mechanics/magic_pen). Right-click a block with one and the circle is cast on the face you clicked. A written **spell** can also be fired into the air, where you look. It is used up when the cast goes off. Anyone can read one, and it is prepaid, so the reader pays nothing for the cast.

## Crafting scrolls

A crafting scroll holds one recipe. Right-click paper on a Craft or Smelt circle to write it. The tooltip says which circle it is for and its level. A scroll naming an item the game doesn't know is **inert**, and its tooltip says so in red.

## Lost Knowledge

A Lost Knowledge scrap is blank until you read it. Right-click it and it grants a gate or lore scrap you don't already have, and takes its name. The wiki won't tell you the gate's number, because working out the order is the puzzle. Right-click a stamped scrap to read its riddle again.

If you already have everything a scrap could give you, it is refused and stays blank. Hand it to someone who needs it. Giving away a stamped scrap doesn't give the gate back.

There are twelve gates of the Work (see [Alchemy Gates]($mechanics/alchemy_gates)), and a few more lore scraps that point elsewhere.

Where to find scraps:

- **Brushing.** Roughly one brushing in five in **desert pyramids**, **desert wells**, **ocean ruins** (cold and warm) and **trail ruins** turns up a scrap.
- **Chests.** A small chance (5%) in **stronghold libraries**, **desert pyramids**, **jungle temples**, **ancient cities** and **woodland mansions**.

## Tome of Knowledge

The Tome is assembled from one scrap of each of the twelve gates: throw them together onto a Transmute I circle and after five seconds they become the Tome. Right-click it to read. It builds its pages from the gates the game has loaded right now, so a datapack's changes show up in a Tome you already own. The Tome holds nothing of its own. It is a key, not a record. The lore scraps are not part of it.
