Tomato seeds are items obtained by breaking grass, or more abundantly harvested from tomato crops, and are used to plant them.

Tomato seeds can be obtained from breaking short grass or fern, which have a 15% chance to yield 1 seed.
Harvesting fully-grown tomato crops yields between 0 and 3 seeds per crop (about 1.71 seeds per crop on average).
The drop amount is determined by a binomial distribution: there are three attempts to drop a seed, each with a success probability of about 57%, resulting in 0 to 3 seeds dropped. Each level of Fortune enchantment increases the number of attempts by one.

Usage
Crop
Tomato seeds can be placed on farmland by right-clicking, where they grow through four stages. When left alone, tomato seeds planted on farmland grow to become tomato crops, which can be harvested by the player. Seeds require a light level of 8 or greater to plant and 9 or greater to grow.
Crops grow faster if the farmland they are planted on is hydrated. Using bone meal on crops also increases the speed of growth by randomly increasing their growth stage.
Breaking fully-grown tomato crops yields 1 tomato and between 0 and 3 seeds (more seeds can drop with Fortune). If harvested early, the crop drops 1 seed but no tomato. Crops will also break if pushed by a piston or if their supporting farmland is destroyed or reverts to dirt (e.g., by being trampled), dropping their usual items.
Composting
Placing tomato seeds into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.
