Gearshifters are mechanisms which can double torque by halving speed, or vice-versa.

Usage

Gearshifters can connect to other mechanical blocks on three sides; one connection on the side of the big gear, and two connections to the small gear.

When placing the block, the big gear will face the block the gearshifter is placed against. If the sprint key is held, the small gear axle will face the block placed against instead. A placement preview is displayed while placing the block:

When a mechanical power source is connected to the big gear, the small axle will spin twice the speed, but it will only feel half the torque.

When a mechanical power source is connected to the small gear's axle, the big gear will spin at half the speed, but it will feel twice as much torque.
