The Chronicler

The Chronicler is a mysterious NPC that serves as a guide for progression through the content of Myths & Legends. It appears after the first player reaches the Nether and establishes a connection to the player's world.

When the first player enters the Nether, a message appears in chat announcing the Chronicler's arrival. A house is then generated in the Overworld near the player's respawn point, where the Chronicler can be found.

Unique Features

  • Progression NPC: The Chronicler is used to unlock and progress through content from Myths & Legends.
  • Research System: The Chronicler provides access to Research Projects that unlock various mod content.
  • One-Time Research Projects: Some Research Projects can only be unlocked once, similar to Minecraft advancements.
  • Repeatable Research Projects: Other Research Projects can be completed repeatedly without a limit.
  • Progress Dialogues: The Chronicler can display special dialogue as the player reaches certain completion percentages in a Research Project, providing feedback as their research progresses.
  • Random Research Events: Research Projects can optionally include random events that can either increase or decrease research progress.
  • Configurable Events: Random Research Events are completely optional and configurable, allowing modpack developers to enable, disable, and customize them according to their needs.
  • Persistent Progress: If the Chronicler dies, its progress and accumulated XP are preserved.
  • Respawn: After the Chronicler dies, a countdown begins before another Chronicler appears at the house.

Location

  • A house is generated in the Overworld near the player's respawn point when the Chronicler is first activated.
  • The Chronicler resides inside this house.

Use

  • The Chronicler is the main interface for the Research System, which allows players to unlock and progress through content from the mod.
  • Research progress is individual to each player. Each player's Research Projects are tracked independently, allowing multiple players to progress through the mod at their own pace.
  • Players do not need to know which Research unlocks a particular piece of content beforehand. When an item that is used as an ingredient for a Research is placed in the Research interface, the required materials for that Research are displayed.
  • Research Projects can also be connected to other Research Projects. When completing a Research unlocks additional Research Projects, the player receives a toast notification, similar to Minecraft's recipe-unlock notifications, informing them that new Research Projects have been unlocked.
  • As a Research Project progresses, the Chronicler can display dialogue when specific completion percentages are reached, providing additional feedback during the research process.
  • Research Projects can optionally have random events that affect their progress. These events may either improve or reduce the current progress of a Research Project.
  • Random Research Events are disabled by default unless configured by the mod developer. Their behavior and availability can be customized through the mod's configuration.
  • The Research System is data-driven, allowing modpack developers to add Research Projects for content from other mods. These Research Projects will appear alongside the existing Research Projects in the Chronicler's interface.
  • The Research System is also integrated with JEI, allowing players to view additional information about each Research.
