Using a standard Minecraft Spyglass (unless disabled via config), zoom in and look directly at a mob or specific blocks (like plants). A scanning reticle will appear over the target, and after a set duration, a sound will play and the entry will be unlocked. Scanning an entity may also grant you XP (both the ability to gain XP and the exact amount given can be adjusted in the config).
To open the guide:
- Press 'B' (default).
- Click the book icon in the Inventory Screen or Pause Menu.
- Quick Open: If you press the open key shortly after unlocking a new entry, the guide will automatically open directly to that newly discovered entry's page.
The Journal
The Field Guide includes a personal Journal! This acts as the "Intro" category of the book. You can freely type notes, stories, or observations across multiple pages.
Customizing Entries In-Game
You don't need to use resource packs to personalize your guide. Once you have unlocked an entry, you can click on its name or description in the book to edit the text directly.
- Want to rename "Cow" to "Bessie"? Just click the title and type!
- You can write your own lore or notes in the description area.
(Note: Custom edits can be exported to a resource pack format. See 'Commands' for more info.
EMI Integration
If you have EMI installed, you can hover over any item in the EMI interface and press the Field Guide keybind ('B' by default).
This will automatically open your Field Guide and search for any entities or blocks that drop that specific item!
