LogoAraxer's Bestiary

Getting Started

The Bestiary is highly customizable and extensible via datapacks.

To give the right direction what is possible to configure, this quick guide will help explain the most important concepts.

Configuration depends on how you want to play the game. Some Examples:

  1. If you wish, you can disable the progression system all together and see all information by default kind of as a wiki.

  2. You can set the Kills threshold to 1 on every threshold type to make the Bestiary work like the Witcher III bestiary.

  3. In Sighting mode to observe with a spyglass and unlock all information without killing anything.

  4. If you want to play in a more advanced progression mode, the Ranks mode provides configurations to make it harder or easier. Even when to unlock information, can be customized.

Mobs

You can blocklist mobs from the Bestiary if they have no real purpose or just parts of an entity.

Modes

The Bestiary has three modes:

  • Sighting mode - observing and unlocking all information
  • Kills mode - counting defeats and unlocking information at fixed thresholds
  • Ranks mode where the rank mode has two progression systems:
    • Points mode - deterministic progression
    • Chance mode - probabilistic progression

Ranks mode

The Ranks mode is the most complex mode. It has two progression systems: Points mode and Chance mode.

It is also the default mode to play. Ranks mode has also a special Rank to be awarded with challenges the Rank X.

Points mode

Here you can collect points to rank up and unlock information. Points are awarded for interactions. Such as:

  • killing an entity
  • hitting an entity
  • feeding an entity
  • taming an entity
  • trading with an entity
  • breeding an entity
  • observing an entity with a spyglass
  • also getting hit by an entity (by default 0 points)

Every interaction can be customized how many points they award in the config globally.

Further, it is possible to customize the points needed for rank ups or setting the awarded points for each entity in a datapack.

Chance mode

With the Chance mode, you can increase the ranks with certain interactions like killing an entity, breeding, feeding or trading. The higher the rank, the harder it gets by default, but this can be customized also if it should be a steady chance or not.

Deciding what mode an entity individually uses can be set up in a datapack.

Rank X

Similar to the points system, Rank X is only unlockable with challenges. These challenges have a fixed number of points to be awarded. So doing several things will unlock Rank X.

For example. You can only observe an entity with a spyglass 5 times (for example, points needed are 25 and every observation rewards 5 points) and will not award any more points towards Rank X. So you need to do other things to get more progress.

What challenges have to be done and how many points they award can be set up in Datapacks for each entity. See the Rank X section for more information.

Thresholds

Those are unlockable information categories that can be set for any Ranks in the rank mode or kills in the kills mode.

Thresholds are the following:

  • spawnLocationThreshold - where the mob appears
  • lootIconThreshold - what loot the mob drops
  • lootChanceThreshold - what probability the mob drops loot
  • advancedAttributesThreshold - more advanced information about the mob
  • descriptionThreshold - description of the mob when setup with datapacks
  • mobTypeChipKillsThreshold - reveal a small type hint tag, for example (undead, arthropod, etc.)
