Apatosaurus louisae

Apatosaurus louisae

Apatosaurus was a massive, long-necked sauropod from the Late Jurassic period. Known for its enormous size and whip-like tail, it roamed in herds and fed on low- to mid-level vegetation. Fossils of Apatosaurus have been discovered in North America, making it one of the most iconic sauropods of its time.

Appearance

  • Large sauropod with a long, low-held neck, a broad barrel-shaped body, and a very long whip-like tail
  • Thick, pillar-like legs supporting its immense frame
  • Overall coloration is very dark, with adults appearing near-black with subtle mottling:
  • Males have a very dark charcoal-black base with a faint dark olive-green tint to the mottling on the back and flanks
  • Females are similar but with slightly warmer dark brown mottling rather than the olive tint
  • Babies are compact and shorter-necked, sharing the dark charcoal-black base with subtle dark olive-brown mottling and no distinct striping
  • In-game size: 29 blocks long and 7 blocks tall

Behavior

  • Neutral: Will not attack unless provoked
  • If threatened, retaliates with powerful tail strikes
  • Slow-moving but extremely strong

Mr.DNA Mr. DNA's Fun Trivia

  • Apatosaurus was the first dinosaur discovered from the Carnegie Quarry, when Paleontologist Earl Douglass found eight articulated tail vertebrae of it!
  • Apatosaurus lived in what is now the Morrison Formation of North America, alongside animals like Stegosaurus, Allosaurus and its cousin Diplodocus!
  • For over a century, Brontosaurus was thought to have been synonymous with Apatosaurus, however, recent studies have concluded that they were separate genera!
  • The Apatosaurus Ocean cosmetic skin is based on the Brontosaurus seen in King Kong (2005).[1]
  • While Apatosaurus is technically a Jurassic World era animal, it is included in Update 1 due to its appearance in some versions of the Jurassic Park novel.[2]
