Bananogmius is a genus of small, laterally compressed freshwater fish from the Late Cretaceous of North America.
Known for its deep, rounded body and schooling behavior, Bananogmius occupied freshwater and nearshore environments and is a common component of Cretaceous fish assemblages.

Appearance

  • Small, deep‑bodied fish with a laterally compressed silhouette
  • Rounded dorsal profile and a narrow caudal peduncle leading to a forked tail
  • Likely displayed bright or contrasting patterns in life for schooling cohesion or camouflage
  • Delicate fins and a small mouth adapted for feeding on plankton and small invertebrates
  • In‑game size: 1 block long and 1 block tall

Behavior

  • Passive: non‑aggressive and will not attack players or other passive creatures
  • Frequently found in schools; grouping reduces predation risk
  • Prefers calm waters such as lakes, slow rivers, and sheltered bays
  • Easily preyed upon by larger aquatic predators and wading creatures

Mr.DNA Mr. DNA's Fun Trivia

  • The name Bananogmius loosely evokes the fish's curved, deep body shape rather than any relation to bananas!
  • Bananogmius is commonly found in Late Cretaceous freshwater deposits and helps reconstruct ancient inland ecosystems!
  • In Jurassic Saga, the achievement "Banana Fish" is a lighthearted nod to the genus name and its small, distinctive silhouette!
