Meganeura was a giant predatory insect from the Carboniferous period, with fossils discovered in Europe and North America. It resembled a modern dragonfly but was far larger, with a wingspan of up to 70 cm. Its enormous size was made possible by the high-oxygen atmosphere of the Carboniferous, which allowed insects to grow much larger than today.
Appearance
- Large dragonfly-like body with elongated wings
- Compound eyes for detecting movement
- Long legs adapted for grasping prey
- In-game size: 2 blocks long and 1 block tall
Behavior
- Passive: Does not attack players or mobs
- Flies slowly around swamps, forests, or open areas
- Adds atmosphere and immersion to prehistoric environments
Obtaining
Meganeura does not spawn naturally. To obtain one, you must:
- Find Meganeura Remains or fossils
- Use the fossil revival process to create a Meganeura
- Hatch from a Spider Egg type egg
Diet
- Insectivore: feeds on
smaller insects and invertebrates
Drops
When defeated, Meganeura may drop:
- Meganeura Remains
- Meganeura Raw Meat

Mr. DNA's Fun Trivia
- The achievement "Look At The Size Of It" references the massive wingspan of Meganeura compared to modern dragonflies!
- Meganeura lived approximately 300 million years ago, long before dinosaurs appeared!
- The Carboniferous atmosphere contained up to 35% oxygen (compared to today's 21%), which enabled insects to grow to enormous sizes!
- Meganeura was one of the biggest insects to ever fly, being rivaled only by its slightly bigger cousin from the Permian period, Meganeuropsis!
- Meganeura is part of a family of extinct insects called Meganisoptera, also commonly known as the Griffinflies, that also frequently get incorrectly called Giant Dragonflies, although both Dragonflies and Griffinflies belong to the Superorder Odonatoptera!
- Meganeura lived in what is now the Commentry Shales Formation of France, and it lived alongside animals such as Arthropleura and Orthacanthus!
